Job Description
The senior solutions engineer serves as the designer for on-premise application infrastructure topology. They will work closely with teams managing new or existing on-premise applications and their cybersecurity partners to understand and synthesize those applications infrastructure requirements. The solutions engineer will take those inputs and design an application infrastructure topology based on Uniteds standards and input from other infrastructure engineering teams. Designs can include but are not limited to physical or virtual servers, load balancers, storage, network location, etc. They will then present designs to an architecture review committee for feedback and approval.
After the design is complete, the solutions engineer will collaborate with infrastructure engineering and operations teams to have infrastructure components built and configured to the applications requirements before handing everything off. Build-outs are generally managed using work-orders in Uniteds service catalog, but specialized requirements may be managed on a more ad-hoc basis with the appropriate teams.
Application Topology Design
- Collect requirements from on-premise application teams and security partners for new and changing applications.
- Reference United engineering standards to design application infrastructure topologies.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to support design.
- Design application infrastructure topologies and write their associated design documents.
- Present designs to an architecture review committee made up of engineering leads from the infrastructure team.
Infrastructure Build
- Submit work-orders for build-out of on-premises infrastructure, including virtual servers, load balancers, storage, network configurations, etc.
- Manage the build-out of specialized infrastructure components like dedicated physical servers, appliances, airport site servers, etc.
- Communicate progress and status to project managers and application teams
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience with application architecture, platform engineering, network engineering or related field.
- Familiarity with the full range of on-premises infrastructure components consumed by applications including networking, compute, storage, load balancing, etc.
- Experience working in a large enterprise with complex security requirements and enterprise standards.
- Organizational skills to manage and prioritize multiple small projects at once.
- Comfort and ability to present to a technical audience and graciously collect feedback and constructive criticism.
