Technical Writer
Austin, TX (Remote within US)

Scope:
- Works with project teams and business users to gain an overall understanding of an application's functionality and the tasks users are required to perform.
- Researches and writes detailed instructions and procedures, with business context information, as needed for inexperienced to moderately experienced users of web applications.
- Writes documents according to standard templates, using simple, clear, unambiguous, and concise language.
- Participates in peer reviews and inspections of documents; performs occasional peer trainings in writing-related topics.
- Assists with the development of the organization's technical writing policies, procedures, and tools
Position Requirements:
The Tech Writer will support efforts across the Office of IT. On TSDS, the technical writer will support implementation of the TSDS Upgrade, especially updating reports documentation and creating new application Help. As needed, they may help with current production documentation as well. On FSP, they will remediate 508/accessibility issues in existing FSP help. In addition, on Multi-Apps they will expand our efforts to update obsolete user documentation for various applications.
Minimum Requirements:
- Knowledge of authoring tools (especially RoboHelp and other tools for authoring and designing online help and user guides), screen capture and graphics tools, and web applications.
- Skill preparing different kinds of technical documentation for web-based systems including, online help, user manuals, training manuals, quick reference guides.
- Organizational skills, to work with the vast array of information gathered and to cope with rapidly changing information.
- Writing skills, to communicate information effectively to users, customers, managers, and technical staff.
- Analytical skills, to critically evaluate the information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, decompose high-level information into details, abstract up from low-level information to a more general understanding, distinguish presented user requests from the underlying true needs, and distinguish solution ideas from requirements.
- An understanding of working in software development life cycles in a team environment.
- Multi-tasking skills to handle a large body of projects simultaneously and to manage varying levels of work intensity.
- Interpersonal skills, to help negotiate priorities and to resolve conflicts among project stakeholders (such as customers and engineering).
- Ability to understand and analyze technical documentation.
- Experience assimilating input from many different sources and present a concise synthesis.
- Ability to adapt to the software development life cycle as applied across different projects, as it pertains to documentation deliverables.
- Proven experience using software change management tools.
