Position Summary:
The primary objective of this role is to provide strategic leadership to a cross-functional team of
database experts, ensuring continuous improvement in the availability, reliability, scalability, and
performance of database systems for RUN and ancillary applications. This position uniquely
bridges the gap between development and operations/engineering branches, fostering
collaboration and coordination for optimal database reliability. This position could be an
individual contributor role with dotted line reporting or may have people leadership responsibility
of a small team.
This role will have the following Direct or Indirect Reports:
Application Database Administrators (App DBA):
Responsibilities include optimizing database performance for the application.
Build Team Database Administrators (Build Team DBA):
Responsible for the development of database build and deployment scripts.
SQL Developers:
Responsible for developing, optimizing, and screening SQL stored procedures and
queries.
Dotted Line:
SQL Engineer (scripting), MongoDB Engineer:
Collaborative support for specialized database technologies.
Ops Database Administrators (Ops DBA):
Overseeing daily operational responsibilities: backups, routine maintenance tasks,
production release planning and execution. Ops DBAs will also participate in the
gathering and democratization of production database operational telemetry for use by
the larger database team.
Duties:
Leadership and Team Management:
Lead and inspire the database group, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation,
ownership, and accountability.
Strategically elevating standards through synergistic hires, where experts complement
each other, fostering a culture of mutual inspiration and continuous growth.
Identify and prioritize database reliability risks. Plan and execute remediation.
Drive operational efficiencies within the database team.
Database lead technical decision maker during critical incidents. Minimizes critical
incidents.
Standardization and Procedures:
Establish and enforce database standards and operational procedures across Build
DBA, App DBA, Ops DBA, SQL Developers, and DB Engineers.
Define and drive database standards for developers.
Democratize production database performance data and extend accountability for
production performance to include development stakeholders.
Strategic Planning:
Develop and implement data replication strategies for enhanced reliability.
Lead headcount planning to ensure the team possesses the right skills and capabilities.
Participate in budgeting and tracking of database capacity needs for both Private and
Public Cloud hosting environments.
Architectural Responsibilities:
Actively participate in the Architecture Group, providing expertise on long-term database
technology options.
Assess and recommend different database technologies.
Contribute to the Architecture Review Board (ARB).
Review database performance optimization strategies.
Support the Performance team in investigations related to database
performance.
Drive distributed caching of data for improved system efficiency.
Support resilience, disaster recovery, and cloud strategies from a database
technology perspective.
Collaborate with other architects within the group.
Organizational Collaboration:
Represent the database perspective as a member of the Senior Leadership
Team (SLT) for the "RUN " application.
Actively participate in strategic discussions related to the overall direction of the
application.
Coordinate partnerships with external database stakeholders liked OneData,
WWSM, etc.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have served as SQL Server DBA for at least 20 years with
around 6 years of experience in Azure/AWS. He is fully aware of the inner workings of
the SQL Server database. He would have worked on administering SQL Server and
Mongo DB. Demonstrates deep understanding of both relational and non-relational
databases. Lead database engineering projects by collaborating with infrastructure
teams. Architects and designs data/database solutions based on the overall system
design and understanding of system component interactions.
