Job Description
The Data Center Engineer role will encompass a variety of responsibilities including asset management and planning, colleague and vendor interaction, and hands-on operational work. Responsibilities will include the following:
- Perform or assist with PSC (power, space, and cooling) and network planning for new installations.
- Provide support for shipping and receiving. Receive and log incoming equipment, ship and log outgoing equipment. Resolve issues with missing or damaged equipment.
- Respond to and initiate new tickets on the ticketing system (JIRA service desk).
- Install, maintain, debug, repair/replace, and decommission racks, PDUs, and equipment as needed across existing and new data centers.
- Neatly cable up new equipment as requested (power, copper/fibre). Enable OOB IP connectivity, including console servers, management interfaces, and server iLO/iDRAC.
- Direct outside help such as Smart Hands or contractors for remote or large-scale work.
- Maintain an up-to-date full asset inventory throughout the entire life cycle – budgeting, ordering, delivery, storage, deployment, operations, repair, decommissioning, and final disposition. Conduct audits as needed or requested.
- Work with DC colleagues on continual process and monitoring improvements.
- Support efforts in energy and cost optimization.
- Provide regional IDF/MDF support as needed for larger offices; some travel may be required.
Required Skills:
This position will require candidates to have the following baseline skillset:
- High level of familiarity and experience operating in a data center environment, with an ability to act independently and without constant manager supervision.
- Participation in defining and upgrading data center standards and processes.
- Solid understanding of rack and power management.
- Experience with installation and cabling of servers, networking, and storage equipment.
- Experience with configuration of servers, network, and storage devices.
- Working administrative knowledge of different platforms and operating systems, including Windows Servers, Linux, and Apple/IOS.
- Proficiency in working with automation software and related scripts.
- Ability to triage, debug, and repair/replace failed componentry.
- Experience with ticketing systems, DCIM tools, spreadsheets, wiremaps, monitoring systems, access/physical security systems.
- Excellent written and oral skills.
- High level of integrity and self-motivation.
