Mainframe Systems Programmer
Location: Remote for now
Responsibilities:
Install, configure, and maintain mainframe operating systems, such as z/OS, z/VM, or z/VSE, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
Collaborate with other IT teams to develop and implement mainframe system upgrades, patches, and fixes, adhering to change management processes and minimizing service disruptions.
Monitor system performance and capacity, proactively identifying and resolving issues to maintain high availability and efficient resource utilization.
Perform system tuning and optimization activities to enhance the performance and efficiency of mainframe systems.
Implement and maintain mainframe security measures, including user access controls, authentication, and encryption, to protect sensitive data.
Diagnose and troubleshoot system problems, coordinating with hardware and software vendors, as necessary, to resolve complex technical issues.
Develop and maintain system documentation, including standard operating procedures, configuration guidelines, and disaster recovery plans.
Collaborate with application development teams to provide technical guidance and support for mainframe-related projects and initiatives.
Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends related to mainframe systems, and evaluate their potential impact on the organization's infrastructure.
Participate in on-call rotation and provide off-hours support for critical system issues and emergencies.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Relevant certifications and equivalent work experience will also be considered.
Proven experience as a mainframe systems programmer, with in-depth knowledge of mainframe operating systems, such as z/OS, z/VM, or z/VSE.
Strong understanding of mainframe hardware, system components, and subsystems.
Proficiency in programming languages used in mainframe environments, such as COBOL, PL/I, Assembler, or REXX.
Solid understanding of mainframe networking protocols and technologies.
Familiarity with mainframe storage systems, such as DFSMS, DFSMShsm, or DFSMSdss.
Experience with mainframe security tools and practices, including RACF, ACF2, or Top Secret.
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and industry trends.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field.
Mainframe-related certifications, such as IBM Certified System Programmer or IBM Certified Advanced Technical Expert.
Experience with mainframe virtualization technologies, such as z/VM or z/VM Hypervisor.
Knowledge of mainframe database systems, such as DB2 or IMS.
Familiarity with mainframe performance monitoring and management tools, such as IBM OMEGAMON.
