Description

Interview Process: 2 parter

  1. Technical interview with Russ and a few folks from the team.  More of a Q & A conversation kind of setting, where they drill into parts of the candidate’s resume and experience that they see as relevant to the job at hand.
  2. 2nd interview for culture fit with other people on the project, but necessarily on the team, whom they will be interacting with on a regular basis.

  • This is inside the Data Products and Platform organization on the Helix project, which is the Next Generation Data Pipeline Data Platform for all of Disney Experiences
  • The team that Russ leads is predominantly DevOps, but is heavy on actual programming developer work.
  • They are exclusively in AWS and are using some infrastructure as code from Amazon, called CDK that is in Python. This is not Script Python. This is ProgrammingThey are using it as a bonified object oriented programming language.
  • The team itself is made up of several cast members, as well as one additional contractor.
  • The day to day generally is working in the code  base, writing Python, writing custom code for their CI/CD Pipeline which is Github actions, as well as maintaining deployments using Github Actions or AWS code pipeline.
  • There is a number of AWS Services they use on a week to week basis.  Lambda is one of the big ones.
  • The platform is very heavy in Kinesis, as well as S3 and EventBridge
  • Experience with some sort of Infrastructure as Code Language or Software.
  • If they have CDK experience, that would be great.  A close 2nd would be CloudFormation. Also, Terraform or Palumi or similar software offering would be acceptable as well.
  • If someone is very familiar with TypeScript, that would even work out well.  Since it’s similar to Python enough so that the transition shouldn’t be so difficult.
  • Looking for someone who is a little heavier on the development side versus the operations side.  So if they have experience doing DevOps, they will understand what it takes for the CI/CD and some of the more obscure Git references and commands, as well as the infrastructure and security side of AWS.
  • Most of their work is going to be done with their code.  They need to understand what their code is going to be translated to once it gets deployed.
  • Team culture is pretty relaxed, as long as the work is getting done.
  • One of the things he looks at in a candidate is to have a sense of what items should take priority and how to self-manage.
  • Someone who is self-sufficient and a self-starter, to not constantly require hand holding and be fed tickets to work on, etc.
  • This will be the 6th person on his team
  • The project itself is a mix of 55 people. And it’s a mix of software engineers, data engineers, product managers.
