Technical Writer
Minimum Requirements: ·
BA/BS + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
Experience in writing transportation type documents like Project reports, Environmental documents, Transportation Policies and Procedures, Board Resolutions, and governance approvals (BOC/PDAC, PDC, Exec Committee)
Graphic design experience with utilization of applications like PowerPoint and/or Visio
Ability to work independently; be capable of presenting technical information in an easily understandable format and context; and function well in a fast-paced, changing environment under demanding deadlines
Ability to prepare documents for audience-targeted readability (e.g., general public, client-specific, regulatory authorities)
Job Summary:
The technical writer position will be responsible for writing, editing and formatting documents ranging from simple technical memoranda to multivolume reports, to persuasive client-facing proposals.
Job Responsibilities: Typical responsibilities include:
Manages the editorial and publication process for rail/transit project deliverables.
Reporting (preparing weekly/monthly/etc. dashboards and reports)
Key participant in pre-planning for developing workable document production schedules and project style guides.
Acts as liaison between technical authors, graphic designers, word processors, and technical editors.
Consulted by other peers or offices as an editorial expert.
May serve as a reviewer of all editorial efforts.
May serve as lead editor for an editorial team working on large projects.
Works with project managers and editors to determine the level of effort required taking into consideration the project budget.
May interact with clients on projects consisting primarily of editing tasks.
May participate in company-wide efforts to standardize materials such as style guides and report formats.
Contributes to development of and adherence to company editorial conventions and procedures.
Technical writing responsibilities that include writing logically sound, technically reliable, and readily comprehensible documents.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong command of the English language, exceptional writing and editing skills, and in-depth knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and composition rules
Excellent editorial skills with a commitment to quality, accuracy, and detail
Skilled at communicating complex ideas in clear, concise, and compelling language and translating technical jargon into plain language for broad audiences
Able to multi-task efficiently and complete assignments accurately
Skilled in time-management and working under strict and occasionally aggressive deadlines
Advanced skills with Microsoft Word, especially Track Changes and Styles functions, Microsoft Excel and intermediate skills with Adobe InDesign
Proficiency using industry-standard style guides and comfortable with in-house and/or client or agency style guides
Knowledge and basic experience in 508 compliance
An ability to navigate in the engineering and railway sectors
Experience with public, state and federal organizations is appreciated
Experience providing regular reporting on large infrastructure projects
